Defend children's rights - reject EU asylum law reform

Before voting in the European Parliament

Osnabrück/Berlin, 09/09/2024-Before the coordination of the European Parliament next Wednesday, the children's rights organization Terre des Hommes warns about the expected effects on children and adolescents on the run. Terre des Hommes appeals to all members of the European Parliament, the reform and the child's rights violations provided therein.

From a child law perspective, the introduction of border procedures for children of all ages, the expansion of the concept of the safe third countries and the lowering of procedural guarantees are particularly problematic. "If the reform is decided as expected, this will mean the detention behind barbed wire and warehouse walls for numerous children and adolescents while fleeing and the risk of returns to countries in which they are not safe," says Joshua Hofert, board spokesman for Terre des Hommes. »In particular, the imprisonment for migration control contradicts the UN Convention on the Rights of the Children and has been proven that children are physical and psychological damage. Reports of our project partners at the European external borders are already proving this today, and it is feared that this practice will expand «.

Terre des Hommes sees a cancellation of the numerous children and adolescents who are looking for protection in Europe in the EU asylum law reform. "Your rights will be further ignored in the European Union in the future," said Joshua Hofert. "Before the European elections in June of this year, the EU institutions send exactly the wrong sign: Instead of a Europe of foreclosure, we demand courage from the MPs of the European Parliament to re-enter a Europe of human and children's rights".
