End human rights violations at the EU external borders instead of legitimizing

Terre des Hommes calls for a "no" of the Federal Government on the Instrumentalization Ordinance

Berlin, 06.12.2022-On December 8th, the decision is due in Brussels to a legislative proposal that would legitimize human rights violations at the EU external borders and undermine the rule of law in Europe. "The so-called instrumentalization regulations would largely give the inhumane handling of seekers seeking protection at the EU external borders a legal basis," said Sophia Eckert, asylum and migration expert at Terre des Hommes. "We cannot and do not accept that."

Together with numerous other organizations, Terre des Hommes therefore calls on the Federal Government to vote on the instrumentalization regulations in the Council for Justice and the Interior of the European Union clearly and clearly with "No". In the coalition agreement, the government had stated that "ending the illegal rejections and suffering at the external borders". Now it will be shown how serious it is with this promise.

Member States of the European Union have been doing serious human rights violations at the EU's external borders for years. Safety seekers are pushed back at the borders or detained under inhumane conditions when entering. The instrumentalization regulation would legitimize this procedure and reduce European regulations for asylum procedures as well as for the accommodation and care of those seeking protection far below any human rights to a weight.

»Safety seekers could be detained for up to five months. This also applies to unaccompanied minors, families, traumatized and people with illness or disability, «says Sophia Eckert. "Whether Europe is accepting this or yet decides to respect human dignity and the fundamental legal and human rights principles in Europe will be shown in the vote on December 8th."
