For the 75th anniversary: high time for children's rights in the Basic Law!

Osnabrück/Berlin, May 21, 2024 - On the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, the child rights organization Terre des Hommes to the democratic parties in the German Bundestag appeals to finally anchor children's rights in the Basic Law.

"The admission of the child rights to the Basic Law would be an important and overdue signal," said Joshua Hofert, board spokesman for Terre des Hommes. »Especially in times of multiple crises such as the climate crisis, it is central that children can also demand and enforce their rights themselves. Children's rights in the Basic Law create a legal basis for this. Children have to have a lot more say in the design of their presence and their future. "

More than 300 candidates for the German Bundestag joined the #children's rights champion campaign . 147 of them were elected to the German Bundestag. They explained that they want to promote the participation of children, strengthen investments in education, to combat child poverty and inequality. In all of these children's rights, there are still considerable deficits in legislation and practice. Anchoring child rights in the Basic Law would be an important signal that would have to follow further steps.

"We urgently need to be a more child -friendly country," said Joshua Hofert. "By child rights in the Basic Law, the state would be more committed to perceive its responsibility for child -friendly living conditions and equal development opportunities for all children and adolescents."
