The world in crisis mode: Report on the reality of German development policy demands trend reversal for financing

Global challenges require stable financing instead of cuts

Berlin, June 26, 2024  - Welthungerhilfe and Terre des Hommes warn the Federal Government, not to further reduce funds for development cooperation and humanitarian aid. The current situation worldwide gives rise to great concern: the number of people affected by hunger has been increasing continuously since 2016 and is around 280 million last year. Children and young people are particularly affected.

»If Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner implemented the current financial planning, the financing in 2025 will drop by another 1.6 billion euros. That would be a total decline of around 25 percent within a legislative period, «explains Joshua Hofert, board member of the communication of Terre des Hommes. »What is often forgotten in a budget debate: Millions of people in the African continent alone would be affected in Sudan, Somalia or Burkina Faso, which suffer from the consequences of crises and conflicts. Educational and training programs for children and adolescents in southern Africa would be shortened as drastically as adaptation programs against the consequences of climate change in the Sahel region. «

A main focus this year is on the Federal Government's Africa Politics against the background of current political developments on the continent. Terre des Hommes and Welthungerhilfe call for a binding guideline for the goals that the federal government wants to agree with the African countries, as well as what offers it makes the affected countries.

»It is time to adapt the different Africa papers of the departments to the changed challenges in Africa. The outdated narrative of the "crisis artist" Africa should be overcome and the role of Africa was recognized as a courted partner. Therefore, the Federal Government should lead the dialogue at eye level and coordinate its measures closely with the existing concepts of the African Union. Nutrition protection and strengthening rural areas have to be given priority. The BMZ's budget cuts in this area of more than 30 percent in 2023 are short -sighted and send the wrong signal to abolish hunger, «emphasizes Mathias Mogge, General Secretary of Welthungerhilfe.

Since its foundation, more than 11,498 foreign projects in 72 countries have been funded with 4.75 billion euros. Welthungerhilfe works according to the basic principle of help to help themselves: from fast disaster relief to the reconstruction and long -term projects of development cooperation with national and international partner organizations.

The development policy child law organization Terre des Hommes has been committed to children in need for over 50 years. Terre des Hommes stops violence against children, protects them from slavery, exploitation and abuse and is committed to ensuring that children can grow up in a healthy environment that also offers future generations.
