Terre des Hommes on the start of the new government
With the election of the Federal Chancellor and the presentation of the cabinet, the course has been set for the new federal government. "We welcome the fact that there will also be an independent Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the leadership of Reem Alabali-Radovan in the next legislative period," explains Joshua Hofert, Spokesperson of the Board of Terre des Hommes . "We are pleading with Ms. Alabali-Radovan and the BMZ for an offensive for children's rights in development cooperation. Because so far, there is much to suggest that children will not be given the place they deserve in the new federal government's development policy. The planned cuts and the stronger focus on German self-interest are warning signals about the realization of children's rights, because their lives are often at stake. In regions of extreme poverty, in crisis and conflict zones, children need food, protection from violence and exploitation, medical care and education. Help and protection for these children must be a priority for German development cooperation and be reflected in an appropriate budget," said Hofert.
The continuation of the German supply of delivery of the German Landproofing Act and an ambitious implementation of the EU supply chain directive also includes maintaining children's rights. Both instruments serve to prevent the exploitation of children along global value chains. »Basically, it is about ensuring that products of our daily needs such as coffee, cocoa or sugar do not land on our breakfast table by children's hand. Our prosperity must not be based on the exploitation of children, «says Joshua Hofert.
The realization of children's rights in Germany is acutely endangered by the planned change of course in the field of migration. The almost complete attitude of the federal recording program, the restriction of family reunification, rejections at the limits and the massive expansion of deportations are an unacceptable reaction to the desperate escape from war, violence and terror. »The current plans further limit the few legal escape routes to Europe. If legal ways are missing, the irregular migration is increasing - those affected choose more and more dangerous escape routes from despair, which means that more and more children and adolescents are fleeing, «explains Hofert.
